The Goblin King: A David Bowie & Labyrinth Tribute
June 2017
This is what happens when you don’t love your baby brother. What brother? Brother with the power. What power? Power of voodoo. Who do? You do.
Shake the mothballs off your embroidered vest and join Sarah, Hoggle, and Jareth, the Goblin King, as they navigate the twists and turns of adolescence, friendship, and greed. Have you ever wanted to walk upside down up a staircase with feathered hair? Of course you have. We all want that dance magic. Lucky for you, the entrance to the Labyrinth is easier to navigate than the labyrinth itself. It’s actually in Northeast Portland, just off Lombard Street next to the train tracks. Don’t forget your friends.
TriptheDark has gone from fairy tales (The Wolf Child’s Mother, Just Right) to popular 80s films (I Carried A Watermelon) to the dark comedy of Twin Peaks (Dance of the Dream Man). But perhaps no other cultural touchstone is better suited to TriptheDark’s aesthetic of wit, whimsy, creativity, and mischief than The Labyrinth.
The Goblin King’s hypnotic jewels have inspired the structure of the performance. Each act will serve as a different prism to view the story from the perspectives of Sarah, The Goblin King, and Hoggle. This tribute to The Labyrinth and David Bowie will be told through contemporary dance with some splattering of tap and modern movement, and a healthy amount of popular and obscure Bowie songs.
